well good news and bad. I can boot into a 2.26.32 kernal which is close to what I can get working under centos. But I can't start X, and don't have internet, (wired or otherwise).
Modules are loaded but X says it can't find drivers. Any hints?

Rebuild X and all installed X drivers (xf86-video-* and xf86-input-*)?

Code: Select all
emerge -1v xorg-x11 # If that does not pull in xorg-xerver then merge that too.
emerge -1v xf86-video-<whatever you have installed>
emerge -1v xf86-input-evdev
emerge -1v xf86-input-synaptics # If you have it installed.
emerge -1v mesa mesa-progs

emerging all that stuff made no difference, HOWEVER in a fit of desperation I tried emerging wicd and it somehow made the difference.

SUCCESS!!!

update... spoke too soon.

It worked for about 2 minutes then lost connection.

running /etc/init.d/wicd start gives an error.
running /etc/init.d/wpa_suppliment gives an error

could it be as simple as configuration problems?

Update works after all

I was using a range extender on my home network that seemed to be confusing things. when I turned it off the wireless worked flawlessly. I then re-setup the range extender and now things are fine.
