"Connection auto eth0 failed" Issue - Network Manager

Postby tonyawards » Sun Nov 20, 2011 20:59

I am having an issue with eth0, not being able to connect on boot, or at all.

Last time it did this was a couple of weeks ago, also after some big updates (this time it was the kde 4.7.3 set), and I did everything last time that I have just tried again below. Also with no luck, like today. Then a day later when I went to boot up, it "magically" found the network normally (never comforting...) and was fine until now.

Does this sound like some update-related issue or a config setting going astray, or a hardware problem? AFAIK my Ethernet card is fine and the activity light is blinking regularly, but maybe there's some intermttent problem...? I have changed cables but no luck, and the other laptops on our home network are all fine.

Here's my terminal output from the most recent time I've tried to repair:

# ifconfig -a

My settings in NetworkManager are:

DHCP - automatic
Connect Automatically and System Connection are both checked
IPv4 at bottom is checked

Restrict to eth0 Interface is selected
Cloned MAC Address is currently 00-1b-24-04-66-02
but sometimes (and also when it's working) I have seen the MAC Address's field blank as well...

Nothing in the Security tab section is checked
Store conenction in secure storage (encrypted) is selected

Per Fitcarraldo's advice on another thread I tried setting the MTU to 1496 (just at random - I can't ping anything) but it made no difference, I have repeatedly restarted NetworkManager, both in the terminal and GUI. I also disabled kWallet in the system settings with no change, so I re-enabled it.

Device Viewer shows my HP dv6000 laptop has nVidia MCP51 ethernet controller.

I'm not really sure wht else to do here to narrow this down. Any ideas?

Here's my lspci

Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
