Cannot enable mobile broadband Huawei E220

I have a

that I can configure with knetworkmanager, and in knetworkmanager, there is also the checkbox "enable mobile broadband" when I plug the device in.

However, I cannot enable the thing - the checkbox won't accept my clicks. I have tried rfkill, but it doesn't show the broadband stick.

The modem has worked until one year ago or so, but at some point, the capability was lost after an upgrade. I can work with that Huawei E5 Mobile Hotspot, so no pressing issue, but I would love to get it right again.

Uninstalled knetworkmanager, installed nm-applet -> problem gone!

nm-applet has other issues (it doesn't start automatically, quite often, but not always, the network icons are huge) but the real job it does reliably.

Which version of SL are you using, and when did you last update and upgrade it? The package knetworkmanager is obsolete and does not even exist in the Portage and Entropy repositories these days, having been replaced by networkmanagement:
