XFCE unable to connect to wifi [Solved]

I tried to create a new wireless network through NM-Applet, but I got

Connection add failed
Insufficient privileges.

I thought I have to add my user to network group, but there is no network group in /etc/group.

Then I realized, that I'm not able to connect to any wireless network at all, though wifi-networks are recognized (NM shows them, as well as iwlist scan)...

Any ideas how to fix it?

P.S.: Where did the ip command disappeared?

Found a workaround: I started nm-applet with sudo and was able to manage my wireless connections and connect to Internet.

I think I have had my share of trouble with NetworkManager. Once again I sort it all out using wicd instead. Add the wicd initscript to default (and remove NetworkManager) and start the client. No more trouble with NetworkManager. While I had to fill in SSID manually the NM-applet, the Wicd found my SSID and I just had to add the key.

One can use the client without the init-script but I think it will ask for root passwd every time it starts. Using the init-script is a good thing.

Installing gnome-extra/polkit-gnome solves the issues.
