Yet another wifi issue. Usual solutions didn't help [Solved]

Postby sputnikk » Thu Aug 18, 2011 1:17

Hi folks,

I'm loving my sabayon install but having problems with wifi only at home.

Internet browsing when on wireless only.

I've done my homework, read all the stuff about ipv6.

I've recompiled the kernel w/out ipv6 in it or as a module. It is in no way shape or form loaded. modprobe doesn't show it. ifconfig doesn't show an ipv6 address.

this is happening across all browsers but I still went to go download firefox and disabled ipv6 there with no success.

i've done iwconfig wlan0 power off. still slow.

i've done iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M (and tried tacking on fixed). still slow nor does it seem to take when looking at the output of iwconfig afterwards.

plugging in ethernet works just fine.

when pinging my home router from wireless, i get response times of 2ms!
wired = 0.3 ms.

I tried google dns servers. still slow.

lspci lists the card as Intel WiFi link 5100.

I just don't know what else to try! i obviously tried the modprobe alias ipv6 stuff before recompiling, that never helped - hence I decided to recompile.

Here is the weird part: when on wireless at work - it works fine. But if its the router not supporting ipv6, and its disabled in the kernel; how the.....?!??!?!?

Router is a netgear wnr1000v3 btw..

appreciate any help

goodness, how frustrating yet lovely and interesting is it when you get so frustrated and fed up - you come to the forums to ask for help. then 5 mins later - you figure it out on your own.

my router truly does NOT support ipv6 nor is flashable w/ tomato, openwrt, etc.. however does support N. I had to go to wireless settings and drop "Mode" from 150Mbps/72Mbps to 54Mbps. Even when set to one of the higher ones, iwlist showed 54 as the max - but I guess in the process of auto negotiation somewhere it would get all boogered up. So if anyone is still having these issues, this is worth a shot (note, my WIRED was fine; wireless was bad).

Summary list of things to try:

1. Google dns in resolv.conf
2. Recompile ipv6 out of kernel
3. disable ipv6 in firefox in about:config
4. iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M
5. iwconfig wlan0 power off
6. Force your router to 54Mbps ----!!!!!!!
