Which version of SL? 5.5? Which edition of SL? KDE? GNOME? E17? Xfce? CoreCDX? Which architecture? x86? amd64? What hardware are you running it on? Manufacturer? Model? What tpye of WiFi controller are you using? Also, open a Konsole/Terminal window, log in as the root user and enter the commands lspci and lsusb and paste here the output. Are you using Wicd, NetworkManager+nm-applet or ConnMan applications for the network manager?

Have a look at my post concerning kwallet and configuring it. Sounds a bit crazy but it was the way that I got my wireless working and it sounds like you are having the same symptoms that I had.

i was using the 5.5 kde 64 version, the network manager did not look like the common nm-applet / wicd it looked like something you'd see in windows
i'm using a asus laptop ath9k wireless
i'm in another distro right now i don't have internet there
so i'll post the output from here while i reboot into sabayon again to see if anything changed

Code: Select all
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

I have the same wireless controller in my nettop, and that works, so it should be possible for your PC to work:

Code: Select all
# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Host Bridge (rev b1)
00:00.1 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Memory Controller (rev b1)
00:03.0 ISA bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP79 LPC Bridge (rev b2)
00:03.1 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Memory Controller (rev b1)
00:03.2 SMBus: nVidia Corporation MCP79 SMBus (rev b1)
00:03.3 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Memory Controller (rev b1)
00:03.5 Co-processor: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Co-processor (rev b1)
00:04.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP79 OHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev b1)
00:04.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP79 EHCI USB 2.0 Controller (rev b1)
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
00:09.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP79 PCI Bridge (rev b1)
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Ethernet (rev b1)
00:0b.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP79 SATA Controller (rev b1)
00:10.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP79 PCI Express Bridge (rev b1)
00:15.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP79 PCI Express Bridge (rev b1)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation ION VGA (rev b1)
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

What modules do you have running? Check by using the command lsmod as root user and paste the output here too.

BTW, if you're using KDE then the network manager is NetworkManager with the KDE Network Management plasmoid as the front-end.

Are you using WPA encryption? If yes, is the SSID cloaked? If yes, uncloak it and try to establish a connection.

EDIT: I just typed all that and it's working.  Aren't you lucky?!
