HP 2101nw print server and jetdirect en3700

Hi all,
Has anyone have any experience or know how to get to work this printer server? I found out that this is actually not a printer server, it's just a port extender. It works on Vista but I can't get it work on linux or even Windows 7 x64, no drivers for them. I could easily add a Lexmark network printer at College in just 2 minutes but this piece of equipment is a mystery. I have used google but couldn't find anything solid or I was looking in a wrong place..

I have tried everything I found on google. I have changed protocols, ports, everything. CUPS, HPLIP etc. work fine but I can't connect the print server. I seems like the print server has problems with the router because I can't ping on the print server from my laptop and even from a router. My flatmate on Vista can connect the print server and print at any time.

Tried that and still no luck. The print server creates a virtual usb port but I don't know how to name it. I had the same printer via usb but can't remember which port was through it (/dev/usb/lp0 or /dev/lp0). My flatmate has "virtual usb port USB001" in the printer settings..

Well, there's the source code for a hacked CUPS back-end http://www.bocc.de/rusbsocket.c for the device in HPLIP Question #57827. Instructions on compiling are given by Jochen Friedrich in his post on 2010-01-15 in the thread https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/57827 but I have no idea if that would work in Gentoo/Sabayon Linux. Seems you're out of luck. From the information in that thread, the device is badged by HP but is actually made by Sercomm Corporation.

Thanks for the reply. I have got it working on my W 7 but on linux it's like cursed or something. I use CUPS, HP device manager doesn't recognize it at all. I tried lots of different options last night but still no luck. I'm gong to look at the information you posted today so hope it will work. Many thanks and karmas, pepe999

I have set a static IP address to the print server, reserved the same IP in the router, enabled appropriate ports for protocols and still no luck. I have to connect the device through the TCP protocol but don't know how. I need to find which port is open..

Hi all,
I'm back and need some help again. I have replaced HP2101nw by a Jetdirect en3700 and got some results. HP Device Manager finds the printer, however won't install the required plugin. I found out that it is a permission issue. When I start hp-setup with root permissions, it works but after adding the printer it disappears and that's it. Even CUPS discovered the network printer but won't work as well. I would like to know how to start the HP Device Manager with root permissions from Applications/Accessories and keep the permissions permanently..

Have you tried running hp-plugin as root user (as opposed to hp-setup)? What is the HPLIP Binary Plug-In and How Do I Install It?

I have done it at least 10x so now I don't have to install the plugin because it's been installed already. The problem is that I can't install the plugin as a user, not root. Good news is that the printer has been recognized and this is important because the HP 2101nw and also HP network print adapter (the same but wired) don't recognized the printer at all..
I've bought a new SSD so I'm going to do a fresh install of Gnome 5.5 soon and install the printer as a network one..
