mdns4_minimal causes slow DNS lookups

Hey

I've been having issues with extremely slow DNS lookups from most programs.
nslookup on the other hand was blazing fast.

The solution for me was to remove "mdns4_minimal" from my nsswitch.conf.

The question is: What exactly is that, what I have removed - and why was it there in the first place? Or, why does it cause problems on both of my computers (different hardware) but is still a default setting?
