My notebook (hp cq61) has a "AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter I ran the lxde live session and was able to connect so I installed sl5.3 lxde on to a external usb drive and was still able to connect
I then ran the lxde live session on our other notebook (hp c700) it has a Broadcom BCM4311Wireless Network Adapter but I can not connect, I can recall having this problem previously I remember searching for Broadcom wireless with the sabayon firefox search add-on finding a few posts that helped to rectified the problem
I think (can't recall) I added a file to /etc/modprobe.d/
I suggest that run lspci in a root terminal make a note of your Wireless Network Adapter then do a search for your brand name wireless with the sabayon firefox search add-on
