PE 1.1, ThinkPad T60 and Wifi

Not so much a problem as some questions. I need to do a clean install. Ubuntu has worked fine, but I'd like to have a look at Sabayon as a possible alternative. My laptop: T60, dual core, ATI Radeon Mobile X1400.

Wifi does not connect with the live version. I know little about Linux. Friends helped with setting up Ubuntu and it worked ever since, but updates messed something up with hibernate, lock screen and suspend.

Questions:
* Should I try to install at all? I would want Sabayon to recognize the wifi connection without ndiswrapper and I need to use WPA. If yes, what should I do (step-by-step please) if wifi is not found after a hard disk install?
* Are there special settings for my ThinkPad?
* How can I get the fingerprint system to work (step-by-step, please)
* Is 3D with ATI still uncertain? I need to do some real work on my laptop... Settings for 2D only?
* How can I get more options (higher resolutions) for the wide screen than 1280 x... something the live dvd offers?

First while in any linux or live cd /dvd mode you might want to as root in terminal / konsole :
# su
passwd:
# lspci

This should list hardware working or not but might help narrow the wifi setup issues down.
You should be able to safe the lspci to a text file on the windows / other linux partitions you use to access the internet with.

Likely it is the ipw3945 card for wifi and someone has posted a fix for this in the past 10 days.

Ati can do 2d / 3d / play games provided your x1400 can leep up with the games.

At live dvd boot press F5 instead of enter and add the cheat codes to it:
xdriver=ati res=1440x900 --

provided this is correct res for the screen , if too high it should lockup or be blank during boot and hold the power button in for 7+ sec.s to kill the pc.

Hard disk install is likely the only way to get the wifi working without using ndiswrapper as a temp fix as likely you might need internet connection to get a driver or something.

Settings have a look at the wiki top right of this page for more info on the T60 or the gentoo forums / wiki.

Wifi:
in the networking part of the forums on top is a sticky I made for " before 3.4e ipw3945 ...." and in this is most links to ndiswrapper / gentoo default networking etc etc that can be helpfull for you as well.

Wpa is a bit sensitive for weak signals so make sure it is good enough not to give you issues during connect but depends on the wifi card.

The Intel wifi works (I am writing this under Ubuntu 7.10 with no problems), complete with WPA2.

Cool you have the intel ipw3945 wifi card so it should be fairly easy.

This card work well with either ndiswrapper or any of the default driver in SL but some works better than others.
I have the same ipw3945 as backup wifi card to my bcm43xx one.
For any version before SL 3.4e use this guide if not working by default:

SL 3.4e or later it work out of the box / cd /dvd except in 1.1PE you would need to edit / move a file to get it to work.
The forums is full of the ipw3945 info.
Most of them you just right click knetowrkmanager and select the wifi connection / name you want + wpa or wpa2 + auto + password / passphrase and you are connected.

Just make sure the distance or signal from the wifi router to the laptop fairly good as the ipw3945 does seem to have difficulty sometimes in connecting on a wep / wpa /wpa2 connection with weak signals.
Or disable wpa and enable mac address filter so only your wifi / family / office wifi cards can connect to it if all else fails.

Only thing might be the finger print scanner could be a bit of a issue in setting it up not sure.

Everything else should work.
Cheat code if needed:
xdriver=ati res=1280x....
or
xdriver=radeon res=1280x....

Replacing the ... with correct numbers you know works. Ati control panel should be able to configure it for you as well once in kde / gnome.
