Ralink wireless not active

Ralink rt2561 is built into Averatec 7155 (Turion 64) laptop. Works great with PCLOS 2007, but won't activate, meaning gets no signal, no access point in Sabayon 3.4 x86_64 mini. The modules and I think firmware are loaded, "ifconfig" and "iwconfig" shows it as wlan0. I've tried various "iwconfig" settings and "net-setup" to configure it and reconfigured the net and wireless files in /etc/conf.d to no avail. Dhcp is working: plugging into wired (Agere et131x) network starts in a few seconds without configuration. However, I can't use configuration files from PCLOS because the entire configuration and paths are different. Anyone got any clues? Any app that I could emerge that might help configure or tell me what the problem is?
