Can't get WiFi working - Centrino N130 [Solved]

Hello,

I posted this problem in newbies forum ( wireless and wallet ), but no resolution after a couple of weeks and probably should have been here....

I can connect via ethernet, but no success with wifi. ITX board with built in Intel Centrino N130. Wireless worked under Windows 7. Looks like the correct firmware is trying to load but there is a microcode error? Total wireless newbie, so that is just my guess based on output below. I did try rfkill, but all looks fine when I do a list. I can see the wireless router on KDE network connections when I do a scan, but only the g transmitter but not the n. It says it is connected but nothing comes through. Here is the output I was asked for....

I will try to use the firmware: iwlwifi-6000g2b-ucode-17.168.5.2.tgz

Decompress file .tgz and copy file 'iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode' in /lib/firmware.

I ended up reloading the system, and now the wireless actually works!! Problem is that it is only b/g, and I still cannot see the n section of the wireless router.....

Are there any special setup actions I need to take in order to activate n ??

I thought that maybe the problem was hardware - perhaps the antenna was 2.4GHz and not dual band. The new antennas finally arrive today, but no joy. The computer still is no wireless n-band capable.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?? Hopefully I just need to identify and run an init script???

Just to be sure, give a try with another Live GNU/Linux OS.
Check which driver and firmware are loaded and which version they are and look for the mode your wifi card works in the Live System.

Well, I used live Mint 13 64bit, and encountered the same situation - I can see b/g wireless but no n router. Mint live said it was connected via the wireless connection, but in this case no data could be transferred. Both Sabayon and Mint indicate that the firmware is iwlwifi 18.168.6.1. The lsmod for ^iwl yielded a different result, Sabayon 56238 1 vs Mint with 328352 0 - not sure this is meaningful. Sabayon came back with 'disabling HT due to WEP/TKIP use' at the end of dmesg | grep iwlwifi, and I will try and figure out what this means and why. I put the information previously requested below - hopefully it is useful in understanding what the problem might be.

Hello -

I went back and looked at the Intel Centrino n 130 page. It says that it supports n, but then down below says that it is a single band at 2.4 GHz. Not sure how it is possible to support n without 5.0 GHz, but it sounds like I need to do a card upgrade if I want n dual band.

If anyone has a solid recommendation for a PCIe half height dual band with blue tooth card that is well supported by Linux, please let me know.
