Network card causing first boot to hang [Solved]

Postby smccloud » Thu Dec 06, 2012 2:06

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-UD3H motherboard with an Atheros AR8161 NIC on it. It isn't supported in the mainstream Linux kernel at all yet and requires compat-wireless installed to work. However, my fresh Sabayon 10 Mate x64 install isn't booting. Its stopping when it gets to the part where it tries to install video drivers. I'm running an AMD Radeon HD 5770, would it be worth trying my onboard Intel HD4000 to see if it will let me boot?

It would be worth chrooting into the installation (see HOWTO: chroot from a LiveCD) to check various things, such as which video drivers are installed, which OpenGL libraries (xorg-x11 or ati) have been symlinked (eselect opengl list), etc. Also, have you had a look at the contents of the xorg.conf file in the HDD installation to see which driver it is specifying? Are any modules specified in /etc/conf.d/modules for loading? Also try removing the "vga=791" from the kernel boot line in the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg while you are chrooting. Obviously make a backup of the file first before editing it.

Press F5 when you reach the SL boot menu of the LiveDVD, press ESC to clear the pop-up window of boot parameter options, then append xdriver=vesa to the kernel boot line and press Enter. Perhaps forcing the use of the basic VESA video driver will enable X Windows to load.

Removing the vga=701 & commenting out the lines in /etc/conf.d/modules for my Radeon card fixed that issue. Now I need to reboot between OS X & Sabayon to get everything installed (I <3 my Hackintosh).
