In a bit of a bind. Want to install Sabayon, but...

I'm currently running Kubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 600m, and as impressed as I am with the Ubuntu team, I don't get the impression that their KDE implementation is as well put together as their flagship (i.e., GNOME) product. I'm interested in switching to Sabayon because it seems like a very nicely done KDE distro and because I like the Gentoo approach to package management.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit stuck. I have the 3.26 Live DVD (I downloaded it a while ago), and it runs well on my machine except for one problem: as soon as it boots, the sound volume drops down to 0% (as if someone was holding down the "volume down" button) and stays there. Even if I try to turn it back up, it just drops down to 0 again. What's worse, the Volume indicator stays right there in the middle of the screen, and just won't go away. I'm sure there's a solution to this problem, but I'm just not comfortable installing Sabayon on my machine until I know what it is.

I thought I might try a newer version, so I downloaded the 3.4 loop 3 DVD ISO file, and this is where my second problem comes up. The only machine I have with a DVD burner is running Windows 2000, and NTFS (at least on Win2K) can't handle file sizes over 2GB. The 3.4 ISO is a 4+GB file. So there goes that option.

I thought of trying the Mini Edition Live CD, so I downloaded that (even though the latest one available is only 3.3). It runs OK, but it can't get a screen resolution greater than 1024x768. Again, I'm sure there's a solution to this, but I'm not comfortable installing it until I know what the solution might be. Although I wasn't as impressed with the KDE implementation on the mini edition; I thought that the 3.26 full edition was much more aesthetically pleasing.

So I'm at a standstill. I'd be happy installing 3.26, and upgrading packages as needed, but only if I know how to solve this stuck sound volume problem. Alternatively, I'd like to burn the 3.4 DVD if there's any way I can get it onto my Win2K machine. (I'm storing it on a Linux file server on my local network right now.)

Any ideas?

Don't do the 3.26 unless you know gentoo well, it will be a real mess getting that upgraded. You have to just trust me on that one. Normally the volume control thing goes away on it's own upon install.

The mini install is the way to go. All the artwork is in the overlay - so all u have to do it emerge the artwork and set it up in KDE. The mini has full access to sabayon overlay where all customizations are done.

1024x768 is very very common resolution many get stuck with till they edit their xorg.conf to set their desired resolution. Not a big deal, you can even do it on the livecd, edit and restart X. See the wiki for how to set resolution if don't know how.

AFAIK you can always order a DVD online and have it mailed to you also. I would wait for 3.4 Final first.

It is very easy .

If using ati video card then press the kde start type button and under system is the ati control panel.

Or as root in terminal "nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and change the "1024x768" to say example ("1440x900" "1024x768") for all 3 or 4 options there also check that close to the top of the file " # load DRI " does not have the # sign in fron of " load DRI " .

Nvidia also has a control panel somewhere here.

PS> just started my 3.3 mini cd with the normal boot option / 1st one and then pressing F5 to list the actual boot text and adding " res=1440x900 xdriver=nvidia " and the cd booted into the correct screen res.

Just to be clear: what I liked most about the 3.26 full version (and I assume this is present in newer versions) was the K Menu. In the 3.3 mini edition, it was just a generic KDE Menu, but in the full DVD edition it was much better designed. Will this be included in the artwork overlay?
