Unsolved: Can.t install Sabayon 3.3 DVD

Postby sqlpython » Mon Jul 02, 2007 5:59

I have Sabayon 3.3 mini installed and the compy installs over and over easily.
I downloaded Sabayon 3.3 DVD from Virgina tech and Purchased 2 copies form OnDisk.com..
Neither install.. both run as LiveCds..
The install gets to a point where it is confirming OTHER Sabayon installs and then a Lockup with Error Msg..

Is there any way to find a Good Copy to install on my Dell Laptop?
Where can I get an installable 3.4 maybe..
I am reluctant to pay again only to fail in the installation..

IDEAS Please :!: This DISTRO really seems to work Great as a LiveCD and would like to get it on the HD

and the Error Message is?

Make sure none of your drives are mounted and update the installer with the icon on desktop before starting install

@sqlpython: I had the exact same problem as you. Updating the Installer fixes this. However, I have re-installed Sabayon both on my computer, and on my friend's computer using the same DVD and this problem didn't come again...

and the Error Message is?

It appears in an error message box behind a (Horizonal Loading Bar Window) which Declared
Searching for Sabayon Drives..
But the Error window was Obsured..

Thank you both I will attempt to Update Installer first and see if this solves the problem and report back..
Dont' quite understand why the same DVD would be working after Updating the Installer as the ISO image on the DVD would contain the same installer.. eh well ?

Well, the Update Installer got me by the Error but I got a lock on the Install via X and though the mouse continued to work the click events did not. So I used the Keyboard but that only got me so far an it seemed to lock up Matisse on Gnome..
KDE will not work properly because ..see my other Thread.. of a Large Horizonal Volume Indicator that will not kill and sound
Sliders slide back to 0% although while up there is sound (for 2 seconds)..
Maybe I will try std Gnome later..

You mentioned 3.3 mini worked correctly.

Surely you can just copy the /etc/portage/distfiles folder over to your hard drive and then install whatever you need.

Think you might have to "emerge --regen" so the new added files is listed or alternatively add the dvd of 3.3 or 3.4 beta as alternative sources to kuroo / emerge / make.conf not sure how to do this but this way it will pull in the newer files and install them.

When it comes to time + compiling + using the dvd files for fastest install have to ask wolfden or dark mage or lx for recise fastest install method.

Either way if you can add it as alternative sources to emerge /kuroo it will install them + not download from internet.
Going to see what I can find on adding to sources.

Looks like this option in make.conf can possible add the dvd as alternative source to read from.

Using working 3.3 mini install and adding below to /etc/make.conf

PKGDIR

PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"

Example:
Have to check small / caps letters to make sure it is correct for below but should be able to work.
PKGDIR="$/mnt/cdrom/usr/portage/distfiles"

Used /mnt/cdrom as /dev/sr0 or /dev/hdc sometimes only shows big 3gb squashfs image / where /mnt/cdrom = mounted / loop mounted image on dvd / loop mounted iso .

Could also add a option to /etc/fstab to automount the squashfs when clicked on dvd ? ( loop mount )

OR

alternatively a folder on your linux hd = /home/archive if you copied the /usr/portage/distfile folder while in live dvd to your hd and does not want to upset the current /usr/portage/distfiles folder.
PKGDIR="$/home/archive"

Last opiton for coppied might be a safer solution.

Still looking for install / fastest install options. "binmerge -u xmms" should be faster than "emerge -u xmms"

"emerge -u udept" also speeds up installs and then emerge or binmerge the program's.

Hope this helps for the time being.

Not as Clean as a DVD install..as I would prefer BUT

Thank You a really good alternative and I see no reason why it would not work...
With an emphasis on WORK :lol:

However I will give it a try..
I would not do this on a 7 machine Network install.. Phew.. time consuming.

A really Good Workaround!
