3.4 loop3 upgradeable to final?

Postby varaonaid » Wed Jun 27, 2007 15:08

Hi,

My question is simple. Is Sabayon 3.4 loop3 upgradeable to final? Or will I need to hose the install and start over. Also, if there are opinions that it's best to start over even if it is upgradeable, I'd be interested to hear.

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is upgradeable, couple different ways :

1. Download and burn the final 3.4 disc, start the install, and select upgrade from the installer menu.
2. Download and burn the final 3.4 disc, start the install, and select "sixth sense" upgrade ( never tried it myself, have seen forum posts about it not working well, and have seen forum posts saying it works great ). Difference between sixth sense and regular upgrade, as I understand it, is it tries to minimize changing programs you installed/upgraded from the last release.
3. Using portage/emerge to "update world" -- I now know from experience, not at all difficult if planned for and learned about BEFORE doing, can be a complete system-borker if rushed into/not learned about beforehand.

Best Solution

Backup - Fresh Install - Restore Backup

The time involved with the upgrade methods is too long. It's quicker to backup, install and restore.

So true Wolf.

Also you should be able to use Xdelta to patch your 3.4 loop2 / loop3 to the final version and so only download say maybe 100mb xdelta file instead of whole new 3.4 final iso.

Might be a good option if someone knows the size of a backup and then create a partition for this in case of emergency or as stated for updating.

Not sure if backup partition is worth the trouble but might be an alternative to a usb type hd backup.

One thing I was wondering about is in live dvd 3.4 loop2 you can update installer and then run emerge --sync and this then downloads and installs an up to date system as alternative to downloading the new iso ? or not ?

Man I love Sabayon it just works for me , unlike gentoo 2007 cd /dvd nightmare and the bugs in them.

Sabayon = 5* distro

Is the time factor the only problem with doing the upgrade from loop 3?

I just downloaded loop 3, now I'm hesitant to install it if I have to go to a lot of trouble to destroy it and freshly install 3.4 final or attempt a backup method (which never worked well for me).

If it's possible to upgrade from one of the loops, heck that sounds like the way to go unless there are other risks to doing that.

Well you mileage may vary - time is one factor yes.

I see most people who do the upgrade method end up reinstalling in the end cause it is really unstable afterwards. 6th Sense is only option you have if u want most of your stuff to stay as is. Results are installer crashing half way thru and if it does complete, system is very unstable.

Up to you tho :)

It's easy to back up your stuff and bring it back. I have my systems back in an hour after doing a fresh install.

Hm.. well, all that about instability is enough for me. I'll just install the loop 3 and report any bugs and problems then do a fresh install of final. I do have two hard drives for this machine to fool around with anyway. 8)

I know it's stating the obvious, but I wish the 6th sense or Upgrade would work properly. Ideally, they're awesome, but realistically (it appears) they have a long way to go. Then again, Windows upgrades don't work properly either, so..

'nuff said. :)

What "stuff" are you backing up? Primarily your home directory? What other conf files (if any)?
