Dual boot/install problems with an other Linux dist [Solved]

Hi there,

I would like to install Sabayon 10 KDE beside my LinuxMint 14 system and to do this, I happen to need some help.

So, my issue described briefly :

I've got a ssd drive having three (physical) ext4 partitions and a swap (on sda1). The Mint is installed to sda2 with /home partition on sda3 and the sda drive (without any partition number) has been chosen as boot.
It works fine, anyway.

Now, I would like to try a gentoo based linux too (Sabayon, perhaps) by installing it to the free ext4 partition. In every attempts (and I had a lot, lol) the installation finished without any problems but in the last step (configuring system) the Sabayon installer threw an "unhandle exception" with an extreme-long error message list and stopped without making grub.

I've tried:

-- Put the grub2 onto sda4 /root and sda drive as well.
There results were the same as described above.

-- Install Sabayon without grub and set the Sabayon to the Mint's grub.
Result: grub editor found the Sabayon but that couldn't be started from grub menu. (error message: there's no existing UUID=xxx partition). I've checked fstab and it seems good.

-- Use boot-repair of the Sabayon's LiveCD, but it couldn't solve my issue either.


Any other idea? Thank you in anticipation.

pS.:And yes, there remains something to know: I'm not a big Linux/UNIX guru so I know basic command-lines syntax only. So I can't do complicated manouvers in the terminal unless it's written step by step for me. (sorry)

Do you have any extra stuff plugged into the computer? I know anaconda can fail with something plugged in to the usb slot for instance. Anaconda is a fussy beast. Are you installing it via dvd or usb stick? If dvd, I highly suggest a USB stick.

Thank you. I've tried to install it from DVD. (but on my laptop I did from USB and successed)

The type of my desktop's motherboard is a Gbyte UP43-UD3l and somehow doesn't support USB install (though it offers it from boot menu). Should I look for a new driver for it?

Your guess is as good as mine without a specific error. Make sure the burn to dvd is done as slow as possible, the md5 checks out and no extra stuff hooked up to the computer. It should install regardless of the media, USB is more reliable.

All right. I've attempted it from USB drive too, but result stills the same as before :-/

Okay, I give up.

I've disconnected the drive having the LinuxMint installation and tried to make a "pure" install to a sata drive used to store data only. And (what a surprize) the installation failed again. Again and again.
So the problem seems utterly independent from the another linux boot. I think I did everything I could (including bios-flashing too) and wasted too much time so I give up now.

EDIT: WOW! I don't know how but now the Sabayon has been started via the Mint's grub! It almost driven my crazy... but finally it works!

Sabayon installer worked fine during the whole installation progress (from USB stick) and I think my hardware caused this problem, not the grub and installer.
Flashing BIOS (and updating grub-list after that) solved my issue, fortunately.
It should be an useful advice later, if anyone has got the same trouble I had.
