Is it supposed to be this slow?

Postby M4dn3ss » Wed Dec 26, 2012 4:47

Okay, so I'm trying to install (from the Live CD) Sabayon 10 KDE 32-bit on a relatively old PC, and I've noticed that the graphical installer is extremely, abnormally, slow.
After the basic Fluxbox desktop appears on the screen, it takes about 15 minutes for the installer to actually appear (during this time the CD drive and HDD lights aren't even blinking).

Then when I choose the type storage device (basic or specialised) and click the "next" button, it freezes for about 25 more minutes. After the next step, a small box appears, saying "Finding storage devices" and that takes about 35 minutes.

Then finally, when I choose the partition to install to and click the button to write the changes to disk, another box appears and it says that it is writing the changes to the disk. So far it has been going for over 1.5 hours and neither the HDD light or the DVD Drive light are blinking (i.e. it appears there is no HDD or disk activity)

Earlier I tried the text-based installer but it doesn't allow me to edit the HDD partitioning options, so I just rebooted without installing and jumped into the graphical installer. The text-based installer does not take hours to perform certain steps as opposed to the graphical installer.
I ran the graphical installer with xdriver=nv as it doesn't work without it.

Is it supposed to be this slow, or is it just broken? If I press the reset button on the PC, would it kill my HDD if it turns out that it was in the process of formatting?
If I can't get this to install by the end of the day I won't even bother with Sabayon anymore in the future, which is a shame because it's a nice OS.

Update: It's creating the file system on the disk, but the dialog box is frozen and I can't see any progress indicator. HDD light is still not blinking. I'll keep updating this as it goes.
Update 2: Creating device /dev/sdb2. Still no HDD light, so I have no bloody idea if it's working or not.
Update 3: Creating physical volume (LVM) on /dev/sdb2, and no HDD light. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Will I screw it up if I hit the reset button?

Okay, so I think it is indeed progressing, but at such an extremely slow pace I fear it may take many, many hours. Worryingly, the HDD light is still not blinking (only very rarely) which suggests that it isn't using the PC resources to its full potential... one of the worst installers I have ever used.

Update 4: Installing now, after 3 hours

I can do a complete install in like 12 minutes with a USB flash drive. It's been a long time since I did a dvd disc type install but even so it was fairly fast. It should not take hours to install, something not right.

Maybe it was a bad burn, laser in the drive is dirty, bad media, weak hardware? Was it just the installer that was slow or the whole system was slow?

Well it's an old PC but it ran WinXP decently, and a couple of years ago I installed a new 160GB Seagate HDD, so I don't think it's the HDD being slow.

Well it finally "finished" installing and in the bottom left corner it says "Sabayon configuration complete", while the progress bar is full but says "Configuring system services"
The "Next" and "back" buttons are greyed out and it looks like nothing's happening, how long should it take? It has been on this stage for a while already

Also the text-based installer was much quicker but as I said I wanted to check the partition layout before installing so I cancelled it and used the GUI installer

Disk was burned from the ISO just a couple of days ago, at slow speed (4x if I recall correctly)

Well it's installed, hooray!

But it still puzzles me as to why it takes so long to install? It boots up pretty quickly from HDD

Turns out xdriver=nv is what slows it down - when I reinstalled Sabayon using the text-based installer (very fast) I ended up with a non-functioning installation so I launched the text installer again with xdriver=nv and the installer takes forver to load and to find storage devices
