Multi distros share home but Sabayon entropy gid conflicts

Postby sitquietly » Tue Aug 07, 2012 18:46

I have Archlinux, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Siduction, and Ubuntu multi-booting with a shared home partition. With careful attention to application and DE versions I'm able to use the same username on each, uid=1000, gid=1000, and in each OS I'm working on my /home/sitquietly/ folder without any problems. Now comes Sabayon 9 into the mix. It was hopefully to be the distro I would put on my wife's computer and recommend to friends. :)

But the Sabayon installer gives me an /etc/group in which entropy take gid 1000. My primary user gets uid=1000, gid=1001. Sabayon can't use the shared home folder without creating problems.

Have others resolved this conflict in some way that satisfies you? Sure I could change the user id and gid on ALL of the systems to some common value, e.g. 1002. But what I'm trying to accomplish at the moment is to determine if Sabayon can replace an existing distro like Archlinux (on my wife's computer) and gracefully adopt the existing home partition. A distro that can't install with the primary user at uid=1000 and gid=1000 is not playing well with others. :(

What I would most enjoy would be to find a way to change the entropy group id at installation time. Could I change the entropy gid in the live environment and have it follow through into the installed system?

Any chance of getting this instrumented in the installer so that folks can choose a non-conflicting gid for entropy?

Thanks for any ideas...

BTW Sabayon is beautiful and runs well for me. Rigo seems to be just about right. I like it!

I suggest you file a bug report requesting that the installer be modified to provide the functionality you would like. To file a bug report, click on the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page.
