Installing Sabayon_Linux_8_AMD64_Xfce.iso

Postby monon » Tue Mar 13, 2012 0:37

I have recently tried burning and installing the following files:
Sabayon_Linux_8_AMD64_Xfce.iso
Sabayon_Linux_8_X86_Xfce.iso

The hardware is a HP Laptop:
G62-347NR Notebook
3G memory
120GB hard disk
Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphics

At first I tried just running the live CD. With either iso the installation would eventually end up at a root prompt and wait. I could not discover a command that would work to invoke the Xfce desktop.

Then I tried installing the iso on the HDD. After about 15 minutes the installation hung after a message saying that there may be a bug and to save and file a bug report. After that there was no installation activity that I could discern, but the mouse was active and the Sabayon propaganda screens continued to rotate. There was no activity apparent on either the HDD or DVD.

So I tried a text install. The installer messed around for what seemed like a long time and finally came up with a prompt telling me to type 'installer' and press enter. This caused a new screen with another prompt, but no command that I tried worked to move the installation along. This incuded trying to use the 'installer' command again.

Any ideas, anyone.

md5sum is good. Don't know what you mean by cheat codes. Is this documented somewhere?

Thanks,

hi monon.
it's documented in the Sabayon wiki., but not exactly how-to:
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Sabayon_Linux#Boot_parameters_and_workarounds_for_problematic_Hardware
NB! this only works on livecd/dvd's
You can achieve this at boot time, when Grub loads, and present you with a list of options,
e.g. "sabayon forensics, Graphical installation, text installation, etc.
select the entry you want, (mostly the first)
hit F5, followed by ESC.
and on the end of the commandline (Boot Options) that appears,
enter your desired cheat code and hit enter.

Unfortunately, I can never get to the point where I get GRUB messages. The last thing I did was to download version 7. I was able to get the live CD to work. Encouraged by this, I decided to do a HDD installation. The installation was going slowly but things were getting done, when during the installation of the system files a window popped up telling me there was a bug and to please save the file. After I clicked save, the installer seemed to go into an infinite loop. I could move the mouse pointer, and the propaganda screens kept switching, but there was no apparent activity on the HDD or the DVD. After about 15 minutes, I decided nothing was going to happen, so I shut it down. I downloaded and burned three different ISO files, and all the MD5SUM's checked out, but I have not been able to get the installation to complete. On version 8 disks I could not run the live CD.

I believe that Sabayon is not the distro for me. I have spent several hours working on this and have accomplished nothing. It may be a hardware issue, but I cannot change the hardware, so thanks to all.

it's not Sabayon's fault.
mostly it's the hardware., or a bad mixture of hardware.
it happened to me, a few years ago, with Sabayon 3.5
virtually all was running perfect.,
but i was not able to install it on HDD.
later, i bought a new Computer, and Sab. just installed flawlessly.
I never knew why i couldn't install it on my previous machine.....

Why would it not be Sabayon's fault? I have installed several other distros, and while all did not work the way I wanted, at least they installed.

well, do you have VirtualBox installed on your several other distros?
Try to run your downloaded / burned iso's there, in VirtualBox,
and see what happens...
