udev causing black screen [Solved]

Postby Mook » Wed Sep 21, 2011 21:51

I'm struggling to get Spindisk 6.1 to boot.

Everything is fine up to the point where it boots into the kernel and attempts to start services.

Once it reaches the udev service, my screen goes completely black and stays that way until I hit ctrl+alt+del and wait, or hit the reset switch on my case. - Again I see the CD drive light, light up for a while and then stops.

I try switching TTY's (Alt F1, Ctrl+alt F1) it has no effect.
Ctrl+Alt backspace - does nothing
Just a blank screen

Booting into interactive mode, and enabling service one by one I seem to locate it's a udev problem as it always happens as soon this is booted.

I've tried booting Sabayon with different arguments:

Code: Select all
xdriver=nv
xdriver=nvidia
xdriver=vesa
nox
gentoo=nox

I've tried the normal boot, safe boot and installation modes from the boot menu but still receiving the same.
Again, if I boot into interactive mode and not let it boot the udev service I can somewhat get into console but installer doesn't work.

If I start the service normally it hangs within console also.

Spec:
i7-2600K
16GB Ram
GeForce 460GTX
Mobo: Gigabyte-Z68X-UD3H-B3
ISO: Sabayon_Linux_SpinBase_6_amd64.iso - 100% Verified via MD5

Any advice / help?

I don't think it's the cause of your problem, but try pressing F5 at the LiveCD/DVD boot menu and append the following to the kernel boot line, just in case:

Code: Select all
disablemodules=iTCO_wdt

No luck. Still a black screen. But I did find out console commands do work. I just can't see them :/

Hmm... Well, you don't want to use nox as a boot parameter, that's for sure, as it forces no X Windows. Have you tried stopping the nouveau module from loading? The trouble is, I'm not sure how to stop the nouveau module from loading at boot for the LiveCD/DVD, only how to blacklist it and stop it loading in the case of an installation to the HDD. Anyway, press F5 at the LiveCD/DVD boot menu and try appending each of the following in turn to see if one gets you anywhere:

Code: Select all
nouveau.modeset=0

Code: Select all
nomodeset

Code: Select all
nouveau.blacklist=1

fixes the issue of the black screen, thanks.

I can now get to console. I seem to be failing on grub; I let the installation complete and when trying to reboot
I get: Grub Error: 22

Ah, so you have now installed SL to your HDD, albeit without being able to boot successfully. According to the Web page Error messages reported by GRUB:

22 : No such partition
This error is returned if a partition is requested in the device part of a device- or full file name which isn't on the selected disk.

So I suspect you need to either re-install GRUB 2 to the MBR or change /boot/grub/grub.cfg to reference the partition on which the directory /boot resides for SL. The best way to do that is to boot the LiveCD/DVD, chroot into your HDD installation and use a couple of GRUB 2 commands to re-install GRUB 2. See the SL Wiki article HOWTO: Restore Grub2 (If I were you I'd carry out all the steps in that article).
