Instalation - More Control.

Postby atnoz » Mon Aug 01, 2011 16:42

Jesus... *pale*

Well... The only reason because I posting this is just to warning others users.

History:
Im a experienced linux user and had installed systems many times.

I got the sabayon live-cd (latest) and started the instalation in graphic mode.

In the middle of process i gave up because noticed the smell of "I will format everything".
Some basic questions was missing and the stuffs was going tooo fast to the honeypot.

So, i started again in text mode in a ilusion of get more control over the process.

My hard disk had this partitions:
50gb - NTFS - Windows7
100 gb - NTFS - Personal files
1 gb - Linux Swap
20 gb - ext4 - Linux1 - Test linux releases area.
20 gb - ext3 - Linux2 - Personal files. And my custom distro.

End of story:

After the answer the basic questions i got the menu:
Use the entire disk? -> NO!
Use only the linux partition? -> Well. Must be this one and the next step will be to ask about the details of
layout, what of partitions, ext4 or ext3, mount point, etc...
So, YES.

The next step never came.
All linux partitions and swap was removed. All files erased.
I lost 6 months of work, im deeply hurted but trying to feel lucky because both NTFS was not touched.

Please. Apply some time in the instalation process and make the things more padronized and CLEAR.
It is not hard. Just observe the protocol questions of other major distros.

*depressed*

No need to argue. I just suggest the thing ask which linux partition before remove ALL...
or at last be explicit and says: ALL linux partitions instead ONLY... or partition(S).

*Now back to testdisk and r-linux hopping for a miracle*

The installer is actually borrowed from fedora, is actually a good installer with a few tweaks to make it work for sabayon a gentoo based distro.
If you were to install fedora, you would see the same installer.

I personally do not use the default installation, When I get to partitioning, I go down the list and choose custom partition.
I never use the text installer, since fedora does not have a text install, they dropped support for the text installer.
My point is, you will not see a custom (manual partition) option in the text install mode.
This imho, is why there were two spins created, spinbase with no x, forced to use a text installer and get a lvm for your efforts.
corecd was renamed to corecdx, you get a minimal x with fluxbox, and a working gui installer with the option to manual partition.

anaconda installer is a good installer, is good enough for fedora, It lacks a little for sabayon purposes.
In your case, I want to call it user error, But only for not taking the time to learn and understand what you were using :)

Hopefully this post will explain a little. You can do everything you want if you choose manual partition, on a gui install.
You will not get the same option on a text install.

I have not even looked at a default or text install, since fedora switched to a lvm.
