wont boot

Postby alix » Sun Feb 06, 2011 22:41

hi
after messing around with sabayon for about 2 minutes on a live dvd i decided to install it,
first i tried to install it to a 4gb usb drive, seams that that's not enough space for sabayon, so i figured i'd install it on my external drive
i only have windows xp on my external drive
everything went smooth, i told "the installation guy" to install grub to the /dev/sdb and when the installation was done i booted the second drive and i got grub error unknown file system
i went on my primary drive and updated grub there and now my sda grub contains the sda1 linux, sdb1 windows and sdb3 linux, i can boot into sdb1 windows fine but i can't in sdb3 sabayon for some odd reason

if i try to boot sabayon i get
Code: Select all
error: no such device: *the /dev/sdb3 uuid here*
error: nu such disk
error: you need to load the kernel first

Press any key to continue...

i don't know why people would require this information but the version i installed was 5.5 kde 64
i need help

update:
i tried bootin in manually with

Code: Select all
set prefix=(hd1,msdos1)/boot/grub
set root=(hd1,msdos1)
set
insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb1 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot

and it starts loading and i get weird
[xxxxxxxxxx] blabla messages, and after like 20 minutes it still didn't boot...

update:
after manually booting it it first stops for 5 minutes like this

Code: Select all
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c
request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c

then i get a
Code: Select all
Call trace:
[  480.597265]  [<c102d1d9>] ? try_to_wake_up+0x2ae/0x2ba
[...]

and after like 30 min it was still there

after partitioning sabayon it writes to disk, after this there is a bootloader screen. did you select write to mbr ? and did you change the boot loader location ? you want the bootloader to point to the partition that /boot is at for sabayon. i found i always leave the bootloader box checked but changing it to point at the the partition /boot is at works for me even in multi-boot environment where i dont want sabayon to overwrite the mbr. if your win xp is on the same hd you can use easyBCD in windows to add sabayon to the windows boot loader. this may help:

i personally found other linux installs are not seeing the sab grub even when i update them. you would have to enter the grub files and add uuid's i believe.

you can use the live dvd to re-write the bootloader without a total re-install, but you need to click the install icon and begin the process before the option pops up.
