[Edit] So I let the install continue with /dev/sda as the target for grub and guess what? It does install to the first RAID1 drive and boots successfully from that drive but the boot fails from the second RAID1 drive.
I cannot seem to get the AMD 5.3 release to install to /dev/md0 even though I explicitly change it from /dev/sda during the install.
Any ideas?

Real geeks use RAID 0 - everything else is for wimps and no backup strategy is for nubies.
