I like the icons.
They're much easier to see than the ones currently in use. I see though that a few could use some pixel level touch-up.
Just an observation.

I'm glad you didn't pursue the folder and pen set. To me it has too much of a win98 kind of feel to it.

The "last visited" time doesn't seem to be working. It says my last visit was Saturday, when I've been to the site many times since then. Also the "view posts since last visit" is missing, maybe replaced by "view new posts" which I'm not sure is the same thing. Maybe it is, but since the last visit time doesn't work it's hard to tell. Hopefully this can be fixed, it's a pretty important feature of any BBS software.

Also, I'll join the chorus who don't like the move toward excessive ads for donations. Bombarding the board with ads isn't going to help the community in the long run. One ad on the the main site homepage and one on the forum page should be plenty.

Can no longer edit my own posts (hence this double post, sorry)
