Second Life Requires an Update

Postby MethodOne » Sat Jul 28, 2007 1:12

When I log in to the included Second Life with a new account in live mode, I get an error message that says the Linux version of the game doesn't support automatic updates. I don't feel like downloading the game every time I want to play it.

Secondlife requires an update? Why don't you update it then, its not our fault the client doesn't support automatic updates, thats down to the developers of the game. Besides its a single command needed to update software.

I had the same issue.

I synched the sabayone overlay but it looks like there is no update in portage. But don't sweat, it's easy to create an updated ebuild.

You can follow the instructions listed here - http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Create_an_Updated_Ebuild

The current second life ebuild is part of the sabayon overlay so you'll find it hiding under /usr/portage/local/layman/sabayon/

Create the secondlife-bin folder as explained in the link and copy the current secondlife ebuild file into it. The ebuild itself is nice and generic (it picks up the secondlife version from its filename) so all you need to do to rename the current build to the updated version number (I used 1.18.3.5) and it will take care of fetching the right file.

Recreate the Manifest file using something like:
Code: Select all
ebuild /usr/local/portage/games-rpg/secondlife-bin/secondlife-bin-1.18.3.5.ebuild digest

and then
Code: Select all
emerge secondlife-bin

Ta da - updated secondlife...

actually its even easier than that

secondlife is continualy updating so the easiest thing to do is just go to the Secondlife website
download a new copy of the client
extract the tarball ( then rename the folder if desired)
cd to the new folder and ./secondlife

all done

just repeat the same process if you decide to update the client with newer versions as they come out
same process for thier firstlook windlight viewer

even easier than that, secondlife has it's own gentoo overlay.

'layman -L && layman -a secondlife'

the -L flag pulls in a fresh list of the overlays available and lists them -a adds a named overlay. Do not however add in all the overlays willy nilly or you WILL end up with a broke system.

im not nix savy enough to know how to use layman, would you need to compile Secondlife from source for this?

Not being a secondlife player, nor being interested in adding that overlay I have no idea what is available in it.
There may be a binary version ... then again it may just be an ebuild. Either way after adding the overlay:

'emerge -s secondlife' will tell you, if you see something like secondlife-bin then no, probably no compiling.

otherwise just 'emerge secondlife' and let it do it's thing.

I'm nowhere near sophisticated enough to understand Azerthoth's method but I can vouch for Coma's.Worked great for me after I failed with both entropy and portage. It's hard to imagine how anything COULD be easier. Is this method of installation generalizable? Is there some drawback?

To make it even easier to use, add a desktop launcher and point it at the .secondlife script. If you want you can rename the secondlife directory something that doesn't include the version number and that can remain the same, like "Secondlife-current_working" for example. Then whenever you need or want to update just delete the contents and replace them with the contents of the new tarball. As long as the script name remains the same you want even have to edit the launcher.

BTW, Sabayon runs SL very well. Ubuntu absolutely will not for me. Lag city cubed in Ubuntu.
