How to install the game Performous using a local overlay

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Thu Sep 10, 2009 21:10

Performous is a cross-platform clone of the Playstation 2 game Singstar. Here's how to install it using a local overlay.

1. Surf over to Gentoo Bugzilla Report No. 245452 and download the file performous-0.3.2.ebuild to /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/ (replace "fitzcarraldo" with your username, of course).

2. If it's not already there, as the root user edit the file /etc/make.conf and add the following line:

Code: Select all
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage/"

3. Perform the following commands as root user:

Code: Select all
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/games-arcade/performous
cp /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/performous-0.3.2.ebuild /usr/local/portage/games-arcade/performous/
cd /usr/local/portage/games-arcade/performous/
ebuild performous-0.3.2.ebuild manifest
emerge -1v performous

You'll now find an icon to launch Performous under Kickoff > Applications > Games > Arcade, or you can just type performous in a Konsole/Terminal window under your own username if you prefer.

For free songs to use with the game, visit the Performous Home Page (see above link), download the zip files, copy them into /usr/share/games/performous/ or /home/fitzcarraldo/.ultrastar/ (I did both), creating first the directory /home/fitzcarraldo/.ultrastar, and unzip them.

See the Performous Home Page for further instructions. Have fun.
