OpenOffice 2.0.4 faster to compile?

Postby shoarthing » Sat Oct 21, 2006 21:33

Hi - recently compiled OOo 2.0.4 - took 4h 05m - this was a lot quicker than the last time I compiled OOo 2.0.3, which took 7h 15m.

Have others found this new version to compile quicker ?

. . there is a general [if anecdotal] consensus that compiled OOo is perceptibly quicker . . but if [say] you feel from experience that firefox.bin is as quick on your system as compiled firefox then why bother?

. . IMHO even a 'stage4' Gentoo like Sabayon is capable of worhwhile user optimisations for performance - ie I didn't choose it for the eyecandy, fun tho' that is.

I agree with above poster.

I've actually found that that openoffice is very notably faster when compiled from source. Compiling it is a real pain up the arse, though. Not only does it take long, but it tends to break. Grr... That's why I'm using KOffice right now.

The programs I specifically chose to compile and can notice a difference with are:
OpenOffice
Gimp
Blender

Just the heavy duty stuff.

mine was shorter and actually used java, so I'm happy :D

and yes, compiled monolithic programs are faster ;)
