Another review of Sabayon Linux

Review of SL 4.1 KDE edition: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/sabayon-4-1.html

A selection of quotes:

Sabayon 4.1 is an incredible, unique distro.

I have tested many distributions over the past year and so far, Sabayon has had the worst hardware compatibility among the big players.

All combined, Sabayon is a phenomenal distribution, provided you get it to like your machine.

Yes, I have to say I was surprised when I read that part of his review. For example, Mandriva 2009 didn't recognise the Broadcom wireless card in one of my laptops and I had to get it working manually, whereas SL on the same laptop worked out of the box. Looking at the kernel config for SL, even the kitchen sink is selected, so perhaps the reviewer -- who seems to be an honest person -- just had bad luck with the types of hardware he was using. Overall his review is very positive and thorough, though, and he does give SL a big thumbs up.

I like these:
It's very difficult to dislike Sabayon.

and
My final word is: try Sabayon, it can't hurt. If it does not work for you, think of it as a missed first date; you won't really know what might have turned out. If it does, you'll fall madly in love.

Maybe including wicd could be an option to increase happy people.

sounds to me like he tried it on only two different laptops... I don't see how he can make that statement. But it's a nice review overall.

He should have also reviewed the gnome version for completeness hehe

I also had bad luck with hardware compatability with this distro, unfortunate really, everything about this distro i liked alot, it was fast, had everything i needed, looked pretty, but would freeze up or crash on me or have other weird things happen. oh well, when i get a new laptop ill be sure to try sabayon out on it, hopefully get better luck as well.

^That's a pity. I have installed SL on three of my laptops (Acer Ferrari 3000, Acer TravelMate 8215WLMi, Mesh Edge DX (a badged Compal NBLB2 with some of the hardware upgraded)) and an ASRock ION 330HT nettop, and installed it on someone else's Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E Series laptop with the following results:

Acer Ferrari 3000 laptop: Everything works out of the box except Bluetooth (which I expect I could have got working had I bothered to try).

Acer TravelMate 8215WLMi laptop. Everything works out of the box.

Mesh Edge DX laptop. Everything works out of the box (Well, I haven't tried the fingerprint reader yet).

ASRock ION 330HT nettop. Everything works out of the box except for the IR Receiver for the Remote Controller (but then this does not work out of the box with any Linux distribution), for which I had to build the driver.

Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E Series laptop. Everything works out of the box.
