Here's an interesting site for spam blocking

They intercept user registration and compare it against known spammers and accept/deny based on a set of req's

Anyone that runs a BB should take a peek at this.

The purpose of the post bots, is getting their pages cross-linked over the internet.
This way, they think, google give their pages a better Rank on several keywords.
