Suspend2 Make laptop users happy!

First of all, congratulations for the excellent work on Sabayon! Very impressive piece! I wish my ATI Xpress 200 would work with xgl...Aside of this a suggestion:

The one thing I miss from the distro (and I have to say I only now two other distros which does this by default - zenwalk 4.0 and Ubuntu feisty will include this) is suspend2. The existing suspend is just not usable it takes longer to come back from hibernate than a fresh boot...

The suspend2 kernel patch address this beautifully, it comes with user_splash - even a progress bar to follow the hibernation - this feature would add to Sabayon important functionality and also additional eye-candy-coolnes:-))

I have patched my PCLOS kernel, and also installed this from a non-offcial repo on Ubuntu, and just love it... All of those laptop users migrating from Windows will expect/appreciate this feature - since it just work on Windows, without fuss...

I think there is a suspend2 source in portage even...Although it is probably not the newest kernel...

yes I am aware of it but I'd prefer to have suspend 3 in the kernel. Someone was working on it some time ago.

anyway, we'll try to add suspend2 patches to 3.3.

could you update your sabayon overlay and try our gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r1 ?
I've added ipw3945 and suspend2 patches. This will be the default kernel of 3.3.

I do not think I could do that before the end of the week... I am on a trip right now, I have just tried your liveCD on my company's laptop, so I cannot mess with that.

How can I update my sabayon overlay? It has been 2 years that I have touched gentoo...
Is it just emerging the new kernel? Point me the right direction and I will try...

Yup, I can do that either manually or by genkernel (I recall..: ). I have to download the hibernate script then or see if this is already in portage...

I recompiled the kernel to add in support for suspend2, then emerged the hibernate script. I have 2Gb of ram and only 1Gb swap partition so I want to be able to write to a file /suspend_file. According to the Gentoo Wiki I can edit the hibernate.conf file, or /etc/hibernate/suspend2.conf as I found when searching for it.

I created the /suspend_file using hibernate -n, my kernel line includes suspend2=/suspend_file. According to the Gentoo Wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Software_Suspend_v2 when using hibernate -n /sys/power/suspend2/resume should have an entry similar to "resume2=file:/dev/hda7:0x10011f" which then needs to be appended to the grub kernel line. When I query this mine doesn't, it has "/suspend_file". When I try to hibernate not surprisingly it fails.

So what have I missed?

prolly not, they are already testing beta/alphas of the release, so most code exept for bug fixes has been written.on the other hand if this will not require any significant changes, ie it is already ther, just not enabled, I say yes, lets do this and grab some more lappy users.
