Asus P5B / Jmicron

Postby nuambenzina » Fri Nov 10, 2006 15:20

I coudn`t install ANY linux distro i`ve tried on this ASUS p5b (with Jmicron), because the only distro witch can complete the boot process is a mini gentoo linux edition with some patch on jmicron, and i HATE & Not Able to install by the command line  .
I woud like to use sabayon(please patch that kernel or put there some boot parameter for jmicron) , not neccesarly X64 on my computer because: IT IS EASY TO INSTALL, and IT IS GENTOO(source)-BASED, and huh, it`s FREE

By the point of view about Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP and Sun Solaris 10 in combination with this jmicron from P5B it`s ok, the sun solaris installer saw my PATA hdd and DVD.
Here is my email corespondence with the manufacturer (jmicron and asus) support team:

Dear Sir,

Thanks for choicing JMicron product.
To get P5B working on linux platform , here is several point for your reference,

1.JMicron controller supported by kernel built-in driver, to get pata working , kernel 2.6.18.2 or above supported.

2. all-generic-ide irqpoll work for Redhat 8 ~ Fedora Core 5 and RHEL series , with JMicron controller set in IDE mode.

3. FC6 / Suse 10.2 / Gentoo live cd / Manadiva 2007 / FreeBSD 6.1 or above all support JMicron controller as well

4. to support linux/grub booting , JMB bios must be 1.06.53 or above , for chip on board ,
JMB bios can be updated when flash main bios .

Hope this helps.

Best Regards

Justin Tsai

Well, Thank you for your wonderfull reply. I`m apologize myself because I`m replying with this delay. I switched the dvd-rw LG with and CD-rw Sony and that solved my problem, the xp install was finished whitout any/another complications, everything is working fine.
On the other side, linux (knoppix 5.0.1CD-2006-06-01, SabayonLinux x86-64 miniEdition 3.1, openSUSE 10.1 / RofreeSBIE 1.2p (Powered by the latest FreeBSD 6.1) can NOT be installed, The CD-`s / dvd`s boot either with sony or LG, but afther that say`s that " I cannot find the CD, dropping you on a limited shell, or on rofreebsd i got a screen full with junk, switching very fast. I wish to install sabayon, as in knoppix forum say`s about fedra core I tried to boot sabayon with all-generic-ide irqpoll option but it didn`t worked.
I found some answers with google.com so it`s seems that the Jmicron cipset is the responsable.

Dear sir/madam,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Penny. It's my pleasure to help you with your problem.

The onboard IDE port is supplied by JMicron chipset. Would you please update your DVD firmware and use it on the motherboard to have a test? If you have another optical drive, would you please change another one to use and have a try?

If you have any problem, please refer FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions) or contact us again. We will try our best to help you.

[Problem Description]
Hello there ! :- )

I have one PATA DVD rom (LG) and one IDE Pata hardisk. I can`t

install windows XP / boot knoppix linux... I boot the XP setup CD and

after i "pres any key to boot the cd" the screen remains BLACK, the red

led is lighting and afther 10 minutes there is no cd/dvd activity. I

already tried 3 XP setup cd`s, 2 cd`s with XP SP2 and one with Service

pack 1. The Cd-`s / dvd is are ok and working on my old sistem, a

pentium 3. I run some ramtest (memtest 86 and windows ram test from

U-Boot CD) and they passed the test`s. Strange thing that the windows

2000 professional worked fine whitout any problems. I`ve updated bios,

played with options in b! ios but no effect, the screen remains black

with XP setup. Kno ppix linux 5.0.1 say that "coud not mount the knoppix

image dropping you to a limited shell..."

I tryed knoppix and elive linux roFREEBSD, and XP setup with these

combinations and no effect:
1. Pata HDD Juper set to MASTER / Black connector & DVD jumper set on

Slave / Grey connector cable
2. Pata HDD juper removed off (it`s slave that way) & DVD jumper set on

Cable Select / Grey connector (jack) cable
3. Pata HDD juper removed off (it`s slave that way) & DVD jumper set on

MASTER / Grey connector (jack) cable.

Thank`s in advance for advice.

P.S. The distro is working fine emulated with vmware from windows, but who like to compile/emerge stuff in a emulated machine? I don`t...

1.JMicron controller supported by kernel built-in driver, to get pata working , kernel 2.6.18.2 or above supported.

SL 3.2 has that kernel as default, so in theory, it should work out of the box on your computer late this november

Ok, I`m hoping so... Asus just reply`d me that:

"I think the problem is caused by the JMicron controller. Because the Linux OS can't drive the JMicron controller, it can't recognize optical drive to boot up to install Linux. Sorry for any inconvenience."
