Just updated and for anyone that may come in with the questions:

Why's the desktop black?
Why can't I see the title on a minimized window?

The widescreen default image is now

Very, very good job on the image whoever the author is (haven't looked yet). Helps greatly on the eyes and the whole red and blue issue that causes people headaches. Contrast ftw!

The panel (KDE Panel) is transparent and there is an option to change the font so that you can see it properly with a transparent panel. Go to Configure Panel (available via context menu) -> Taskbar -> Appearance -> For Transparency

That artwork is clearly in the alpha stage. You should be expecting some stuff to not be right.
