Hey! could you guys make CPU specific releases?

When a kernel is compiled specifically for a cpu family they perform great ! Now there are only a few types of 64 bit CPUs, It would be easy to put together one mini edition for K8 (amd64) and another for Intel duo, complete with the configurations needed so emerged packages would benefit !:)
Sabayon would make a first yet again
ps; I really wish the mini editions had flash, java and codecs installed. Apps were easy to add, but I never did get the media plugins right

If I were to persue that, is it safe to recompile just the kernel ( with the march k8 flag) ?, or is it nessesary to ' emerge --update --deep --newuse world' with a modified make.conf.?

I'm not sure how much incremental benefit you'll get by optimizing from x86-64 to k8, but you would probably want to start with re-compiling the kernel. But to fully change over to k8, you'd need to recompile the packages also.

After I get some work done I'll see if I can do it. ( I've had no luck with kernel compiling, so I wait until I can afford to break things )
